カーテン・イチジクの木

熱帯のイチジクは「絞め殺しの木」。大木に着生し気根を絡ませて宿主の大木が朽ち倒れ45度に傾斜。隣の大木も絞め殺しながら雨のように無数の気根を地上に降らせます。写真の右端の柱が寄りかかられて絞め殺された樹高20mの大木の残骸。ここを訪れるのは巨木と縁のない日本人観光客。日本人ガイドは宮崎駿アニメとこじつけて豪州の名所を新開発中です。

Curtain fig tree

The tropical fig is “the strangler”. They clang to big trees, twisting with their air roots to kill and the dead trees incline 45 degrees to some big trees next to them. The killer stretched numerous air roots on the ground choking the new tree to kill. The pillar on right hand side of the picture is the ruin of some 20m-high huge tree strangled. Most tourists who visit here are from Japan who can’t see any big trees in their country. Japanese guides are trying to produce some new seeing spots in Australia relating to Hayao Miyazaki’s animations.
